Curriculum

Maths:

In maths this term, we will be focussing on place value. We will be using the White Rose maths scheme to support our planning. Alongside this, we will also be performing daily times tables practice. We ask you to support us in our maths journey by practising time tables at home with your child.

Writing:

Our writing lessons this term will be focussing on developing stronger writing skills, presentation, and handwriting. We aim to achieve this through introducing new writing concepts, learning a range of different punctuation, along with small handwriting sessions during our weekly spellings. Each unit we teach will be focused on a genre of writing with the end goal of developing from writing small paragraphs to whole narratives.

Reading masters:

Reading masters this term will focus on developing an understanding of a text and demonstrating the skills to retrieve information from the text, understand specific vocabulary, draw upon conclusions using information from the text through inferencing, and looking at understanding the writing and authors choices for the texts. This term, our selection of texts will focus on the topic of ‘pre-history’, specifically on the dinosaurs and stone ages.

SPaG:

This year, we will be looking into developing our spelling, punctuation, and grammar (SPaG) skills so we are best prepared for our upcoming SATs. To do this, our writing learning has developed from colour semantics to more independent learning with a far larger range of writing tools for us to learn. We will also be sending home spellings each week as home learning to best support this development and learning. The children will be tested on these spellings every Friday.

Science:

In science this term, we will be learning about light. We will be discovering the way that light moves, the speed of light, and how it allows us to see. We will be learning about Newton’s prism and how light can be divided into the different colours on the spectrum. We will also be learning about transparent, translucent, and opaque objects and what this terminology means.

History:

This term in History, we will be focussing on the Maya civilisation. We will be discovering their timeline, lifestyle, and architecture. We will be linking this learning to the lives of the Anglo-Saxons, discovering the similarities and the differences between these two great civilisations.

Geography:

This term in Geography, we will be focusing on learning about the Amazon rainforest. We will be discovering life in the Amazon; from the tribes that reside there to the animals that have adapted themselves to the harsh climate. We will be learning how the Amazon is under constant threat from deforestation and the effects that this has on the Amazon and its life.

P.E:

This term in P.E. we will be focusing on gymnastics, using a scheme from RealPE. We will be focusing on varying levels of skill, starting from balancing and jumping to the use of apparatus within the sports hall. The sequences have five key areas of teaching: balance, rotation, flight, travel, and apparatus. Our PE days are on a Tuesday.

SATs

As you know, it is an important year here in the Nurture room, with this being our SATs year! To support this in school, we will be accessing lots of SATs practice papers for maths, reading and writing. To help us and become part of this incredible journey, here are some top tips to help with SATs this year:

        • Engage with the home learning that will be sent out each Friday. This home learning will often include past SATs questions.
        • Encourage your child to read to you at home and try to ask some questions about the book they are reading.
        • Take a look at the links below to some past SATs papers and give some questions a go. You can also find other SATs papers online.

Things to remember

        • Our P.E. day is on Tuesdays; please ensure children are wearing their P.E. kit on this day.
        • Spellings and home learning are updated every Friday. Please could children bring in their home learning books every Friday to be updated. We will also have a spelling test every Friday.
        • Children will be sent home with reading books that are appropriate for their reading age. In the Nurture room, we promote a love of reading and reading for pleasure, so we ask children to read with you as often as possible. Please initial or comment in your child's reading record when you have listened to them read. We promote this in school through Reading Masters and having a morning story time on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays.
        • Please practice maths and timestables as often as possible using TT Rock Stars.
